Tears flowed freely now. I wasn’t sure if I said goodbye but, as I watched my home fade in the rearview mirror. I knew nothing would ever be the same.
MAYE
I spent the past few weeks crying, eating Salted Caramels and ice-cream, wishing I never left class early. No matter how hard I tried life kept reminding me that it would never be kind, I was served papers before I even had the next caramel in my mouth.
Wanting to make it seem like I hadn’t been a mess of emotions, I took my time getting ready. The skirt of my dress flowed gracefully over my hips, falling in waves, and ending in a spread of fabric around my ankles. The soft material a soft caress, a remembrance of the void. Sweeping my hair in an up-do and pinning it stylishly, a dab of makeup and a touch of lip stain. I was ready to see Blake and his lawyer.
A stark white office with no pictures, artwork, or plants greeted me as I walked through the lobby of her office. A widespread glass window to my left, let in little light as the blinds were closed tight.
“Good morning” I croak, then clearing my throat, I tried again.
“Good morning,” I say again with conviction.
“Hello, you must be Maye. Mr. Davis isn’t with us yet, but he should be here shortly.” She said, barely glancing at me. “I see you brought no advocate with you?”
Licking my lips, I tried my best not to stare at her lips. They were pressed together so tightly her wrinkles had wrinkles. It looked like someone’s rectum. Pursing my lips, I shook my head to refrain from laughing.
“I see” the attorney murmured, licking her lips before sealing them tightly again.
It wasn’t long after Blake walked in looking totally relaxed in a pair of acid wash jeans ripped jeans and hoodie. He looked like he walked out of an ad in a magazine. I felt overdressed and incompetent at the same time. His eyes roamed over me, and the curt nod he greeted me with said it was over.
“Alright, I trust that you’ve had the chance to go over the papers that Mr. Davis and I have drawn up?” She asked, her voice hard and cold.
“Yes,” I replied, glancing at Blake. Our eyes met, and he refused to keep my gaze. Was that sadness in his eyes?
“Good. I assume because you have no advocate, you have no intentions to fight the offer?”
“No.”
“Good, because in my opinion, Blake is far too generous. Personally, I’ve been divorced three times, and I can say my ex-husbands got almost nothing.” Her smirk toying with me. “So, if we are really going to do this without a fight, I’ll let you sign first.”
Why would I sign first? He wanted the divorce. I didn’t ask for my husband to be gay. Still, she pushes the pen towards me, spreading the papers out just as forcefully.
“Just so you know, the name Davis will be dropped from your hyphen, so it’ll just be Fairchild from now on.” I almost laughed as she licked her wrinkled mouth again.
“Sorry, what did you say?”
“In layman’s terms, the title Davis no longer belongs to you.”
Her condescending tone set me on edge. With each pen stroke, my anger flared. It was starting to feel as though I’d severed off a limb. I didn’t look at either of them as I slid the papers to Blake and handed him the pen. Swallowing I stood up.
“I don’t want your fucking hush money. I don’t want anything to do with you.” I was hurt, and I have been a Davis way before I was even married to Blake.
“Maye, please.” Blake pleads.
“Take your mother’s ring back.” tossing the ring angrily at his head “She wanted your wife to have it, and I’m not your wife anymore.”
“Maye, my mother loves you like her own daughter. Calm down, let me take care of you” He says softly.
“Then have fun explaining to her that I wasn’t good enough, so you wanted men,” I say.
“You know I can’t tell her I’m gay.” His voice small and defeated.
“No?” feigning ignorance.
“You know how she feels about gay men.”
“Do I?”
“You’re being difficult, Maye.”
“On the bright side, you’re officially divorced.” Miss Sour Lemon rewards up, “It’ll take a week or two for the processing to begin, but it’s painless I promise you.”
This coming from the woman who divorced how many men? If she were in my position, she’d have known that this process was far from being painless. I wanted to tell her to shut up. Instead, picking up my purse and turning to look at my now ex-husband I say “I look forward to telling your mother why you asked me for a divorce at our brunch on Sunday.”
“Maye please…” He begs.
“Goodbye Blake.”
A bitter smile graces my face, and I walk out of the meeting. Divorced, broke and hurting.
“Maye,” Blake called as I walked down the stairs. A small part of me hoped he was about to say he was stupid, even that bit was wishful thinking. “I just…”
“You just what, Blake?” I yelled. “What do you want?”
“I just want to know that you’re going to be okay.” He said, his voice filled with disappointment.
“Really?” I scoff “No, I’m not okay. I hate you.”
“I understand.” Backtracking to the elevator. “I’m sorry, Maye” He waved with a forlorn look on his face before walking away.
Watching him as he walked away hurt. I wasn’t sure why I was still standing there as I blinked the tears away before they could be formed. Turning around and walked down the stairs. Comfort food was needed, and nothing said comfort like pasta at my favorite restaurant, More Vino. Popping into the restaurant, I ordered my go-to meal and sat at the bar drinking wine when my phone rings.
“Hello, my name is Edwin, I’m calling from the Happy Endings Resort; Trying to get on to a Maye Fairchild.”
“This is she.”
“I’m calling to see if you were still interested in renting a cabin with us.” He says “We just had one open up and wanted to inform you.”
“Yes definitely.” Scrambling for my wallet. “You take credit card deposits, right?”
“Yes, ma’am. You wanted a long-term rental, fully furnished?”
“I sure did.” My wine turning sour as I remember the furniture I spent countless hours convincing Blake we should get.
“Great, if you’d just give me the card number and name on the card. I’ll put you in the system, and you can come in and pay your first, last and security, and you can move right in.”
“How soon can I do this?” already saying goodbye to the sterile hotel room I was currently renting.
“The cabin’s already been cleaned and furnished, so whenever you’re ready to pay your final payments,” Edwin confirms before going over all necessary information he needed to give me.
“Thanks, see you soon.” Hanging up, for the first time in almost a month I smile.
Suddenly the music sounded sweeter, and I started tapping my foot as I waited for my meal. I could tell that this wasn’t the end of my life, but it was only just beginning. The pain was only temporary. I needed to find a job soon, or my savings would disappear. I’m not sure if I could live taking Blake’s hush money. Taking my food, I leave the restaurant and brave the traffic to my hotel room. One more night and then I’d be at the Happy Endings Resort. After all, happy endings were guaranteed.
Jade
Sitting in the restaurant, glancing around, hoping that Legs wouldn’t stand me up, after all, she did have my blazer. Calling her when I got back into town last night was unplanned but, I just couldn’t get her out of my head. I was far from obsessive, but she was stuck, and I couldn’t get her off my mind.
“Sorry I’m late.” She says sitting down on the stool next to me at the restaurant bar. She was gorgeous, I could instantly tell why her striking hazel eyes were forever embedded in my brain.
/> “Are you okay?” I ask “You look like you’ve been crying.”
“Fine.” She smiles. “Sorry, I’m fine. Just been a long couple of days.”
“What’s your poison?” I ask “Drinks are on me.”
“It’s only three in the afternoon. I’m not a lush.”
“I wasn’t implying such a thing luv. I mean, I had a long morning, and I would really feel better with some company. Plus it’s five o’clock somewhere, and you owed me coffee, this is just a bit more potent.” I say coaxing a smile out of her, her red-rimmed eyes brightening slightly.
“Sure, I’ll have wine since it’s early and all, but I prefer scotch.” Her laugh like music. “I really love the tingles and the heat it gives me.”
Her blush at her statement was cute, so virginal and so very alluring.
“Wine it is.” Signaling the Bartender “Any preference?”
Shrugging out of her jacket she thinks for a minute. “Prosecco or pink Moscato.”
Turning away I order a bottle of Prosecco when the bartender arrives.
“So Maye” I play with the way her name sounds rolling off my tongue. “What’s got you down?” I ask
“Oh no,” She says. “ I don’t want to bother you with my problems.” Shrugging, she takes a sip of her wine.
“It’s no trouble at all really. I’ve been told I’m a great listener.” I prod. “Come on, nothing feels better than airing it out. Promise no judgements here.”
Her hesitation worries me, and I wonder if she’s having serious trouble.
“Boy trouble?” I prod, the tear that slips out haunts me and my strong desire to comfort her catches me unaware. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to pry. It’s okay if you don’t want to talk about it.”
Sighing she wipes her eye, taking a sip of her wine she tells me about her divorce. “It’s not easy as I thought it’d be. I mean I did everything I could. Right?” The uncertainty ringing out in her voice.
“I’m sure you did. You’re beautiful.” And that she was, even while crying she was a sight to behold. I needed to get ahold of myself. She’s clearly hurting, and here I was lusting after her. It was something about her eyes. I’d never really considered myself a deep person, when it came to attraction I went for legs, tits and ass. Maye was bringing out a side of me that was dangerous. Especially since she was straight. She was off limits.
“I don’t know how to start all over. It’s always been the two of us. Then he leaves me because he likes boy pussy.” She shouts.
I couldn’t help the laugh that burst out of my mouth.
“I’m sorry?” I say trying to reign in my laughter, “What?”
“Boy pussy, you know bussy? He likes the bussy!” she starts gesturing wildly as a man passes by. Uh ohh, this couldn’t be good.
“Come on doll, I think it’s time to cut you off. Let’s get some food in you.” I say guiding her off the stool and towards my car.
“I’m fine. I can drive home.” She slurs.
“Nope, no driving.” I start ushering her out the door. “I’m craving something greasy, and I think some hot French fries a greasy burger is just what the doctor ordered.”
The time on the dashboard indicated that we’d been drinking for five hours and most of the usual places would be closed in a small town like this, so the High Bar it was. They did have the best burgers in town anyway. It’d been a while since I’d seen Stixx and she was surprised to see me walking in with a drunk woman on my arm.
“Well, well, well. Look what the cat dragged in.” Stixx says, her brows raising “You show up to my bar after not seeing you for months and you bring a lady looking three sheets to the wind to my bar?”
“Stixx and stones! Did you miss me, babe?” Leaning over the counter to hug the barkeep. “I came because no one can make a burger like you girl and I really want one.”
“Flattery will get you everywhere Jade.” She laughs “The usual?”
“Of course, no mushrooms, well done and hold the onions.”
“And your friend?” she asks
“I’ll take a large cheesy fries, a coffee and a burger to go.”
“Alright love. Be back in a bit. You might want to sit at a table before she falls over” Stixx’s laugh lingers as she heads to the bar’s kitchen.
I observed Maye for a minute before walking over to her. I felt so bad I made her drink so much.
“Hey Sweets, come on let’s go sit over there.”
“Did you get me food? I’m hungry.” She lifts her head up from the counter, and her long blonde tresses permeate an aroma of vanilla and coconut. She smells so good. Her lips pout teasingly, and I am putty in her hands. Anything she wants, anything to make her happy. Taking her hand in mine, I lead her over to one of the few tables sitting in the corner of the bar, just as Stixx brought over the coffee and cheesy fries I asked for earlier.
“Thanks babe,” I say taking the hot sauce from her hands.
“Ya know, she just moved into a cabin over at HER.” Putting her hands on her hips she adds “Long term or so I hear, any way you should take her home after you sober her up a bit. Don’t want to give the locals something to gossip about.” Winking before walking away from our table.
Just my luck, I just told myself she was off limits, then I find out I’ll be seeing her almost every time I step out of my cabin. The only cabin empty was the one directly across the street from mine. Perfect. I looked at the leggy blonde sitting with her head down on the table before and realized that this was going to be a long night.
MAYE
The warm body stirring next to me was cause for alarm. ‘Who the fuck was in my bed.’ My brain goes fuzzy as I try to remember what happened yesterday after I had drinks with Jade. Fuck. Jade... A groan escapes my lips and before I could finish my thoughts a slender arm lands gently on my stomach. The pounding behind my eyes beats like tribal drums at a mating ritual. Throbbing, pounding, in rhythm with my rapidly beating heart. My sense of smell is so sensitive, and I smell her. Jasmine and lavender envelop me, and I knew instantly I was in Jade’s bed. The luxurious silk sheets partially covering what I could make out of her. Opening my eyes wider, I’m greeted with a thing of beauty. The strap of her blue tank hanging gently off her shoulder, exposing the smooth path of skin. Her small breast hidden from view, with the exception of her pert nipples that pointed out in the thin fabric. Temptation flared inside of me, daring me to lift the covers to see what she wore beneath when her voice catches me by surprise.
“Stop staring at me. It’s creepy.”
“I’m not. I was just trying to figure out how I got in your bed.”
“Shhhh. It’s too early for this conversation. Go back to sleep. Unless you have somewhere else to be.” She says, turning her back to me. Her shoulder length hair, disheveled and flowing beautifully behind her. My hand trembles, hesitating before I stroke her hair to feel it’s texture. The ebony tresses, so sleek it slips easily through my fingers, my nails gently scrape her scalp, and a moan sounds softly in the quiet room. Silently, I was at war with myself. Why am I doing this? I should be worried. My heartbeat quickening, when the bed shifts.
“What are you doing?” her voice, husky with sleep.
“Nothing.” My voice small as I continue “ I just wanted to see if your hair is as soft as It looks. Trying not to stare at the way her inky black hair contrasted with her olive skin. Instead, all that registers is the way it blankets her face in a shroud of mystery, hiding those chocolatey brown eyes from me. Her laugh deep and rich catches me off guard.
“You’re not one bit worried about a strange woman waking up in your bed?” I ask
“I would be if I didn’t put her there.” She says. “If anything you should be the one worried. Instead of freaking out, I wake up to your staring at me and playing with my hair. Should I be worried about
you?”
“You put her there?” alarm bells ring out “We didn’t ummm…” my voice trailing off
“Didn’t what?” Jade as, biting her lips to refrain from laughing.
“Did we have sex last night Jade?” my voice laced with panic. “I can’t remember much.”
“God no.” breaking out in fits of laughter, she looks at me. “Besides, have you ever even been with a girl?”
Her question hitting me like a ton of bricks, I didn’t even know how to answer that question because it’s true, it’s always only been Blake, but looking at her, I just might want to kiss her.
“No.”
Jade moved closer to me, her arm stretching towards me and my I freeze.
“Relax legs I won’t do anything you don’t want me to. I just wanted to get my phone.” She chuckles, reaching over and picking her phone up from the only bedside table in the room.
My cheeks surely crimson at this point as I flush with embarrassment. She hovers above me briefly, avoiding her gaze, I turn my head.
“Want to see what it’s like to kiss a girl?” She asks, and I nod, before I knew it, Jade was on top of me, straddling me with both her legs. Pinning my arms above my head, moving in slow motion she leans towards me. Moving her lips towards mine before slowly running her tongue across my lips. Our lips locked and she nips gently at my bottom lip. A moan escapes my lips, and she slips her tongue between them. It was so slow and sensual, I could feel my panties getting wet with each heartbeat. I wanted her. A part of me kept asking what was I doing, but this part of me reminded me of the feeling of intimacy I had been missing. I needed this.
